Active communities in London and South East England (UK)
London defines itself as the cultural capital of the world. Its museums, galleries and theatres consider themselves as world leaders often with good reason. However under the surface gleam, there lurks another London, a London of local communities with a diverse cultures often rubbing shoulder to shoulder with international tourists.
This study trip focuses on how communities in London access the arts and how the arts regenerate and sustain an authentic vision of London that is both diverse and socially cohesive. The stress is both on locally based initiatives as well as large institutions that aim to represent support local cultures.
To support our reflections on the role of community arts and cultural animation in supporting active communities in London we have organised the trip to coincide with the national conference of mailout, the only national magazine for participatory arts in which all the study trip members will have the opportunity to participate.
